Who am I anyway? Hi! My name is Steven Yeoh. I started off just like everyone else.. Not having a clue how to keep an arowana. I knew I wanted one desperately but had BIG doubts whether I could keep one alive long enough to enjoy it's beauty... Sound familiar? :-) How did I get into this? It was really by chance actually..
When a good friend of mine first introduced me to arowanas, other than the fact that I found it ridiculously expensive to own one, I did not think much of it. I was marginally curious though and started to visit aquarium shops to try and get more information on them. I wanted to find out why this fish was so popular and expensive ...in other words, to basically find out what the fuss was all about! Those exploratory days were interesting as I got to know a little bit more about arowanas.
As I became more exposed to arowanas, my fondness for them grew. I started checking out the different breeds sold and got more and more excited actually. However because of the high price tag associated with arowanas, I was reluctant to get one because I was scared I would kill it! I could already see the $$ going up in smoke everytime one dies!!
Mind you, I was already keeping goldfish and koi at that time but again that was a different ball game altogether right? I could get a baby goldfish for less than a dollar and if it dies, I buy another one. (Ok ok I admit I must have flushed countless ones down the toilet during my learning process in rearing goldfish!)
NOW, with arowanas, it's a different story as it could cost me about US$1000 or more for an 8 inch red or gold arowana. Err.. I would be dead broke if I did the same! Anyway, after months of procrastinating, I did decide to finally get one. I decided to start off with the cheaper Red Tail Golden or more popularly known as RTG arowana just in case…. :-)
What did I do next? I shared my decision with my better half. I tell you, she still manages to surprise me sometimes as I was expecting an incredulous look and some sarcastic remarks but her answer surprised the heck out of me! I nearly had a heart attack when she told me to skip the RTG and go straight for the Red Arowana! At 3 to 4 times the price of the RTG, I was delighted, but also a little apprehensive!
You see, she knows my character too well.. She knows that if I got the RTG now, after several months (ie. if my RTG hasn't died on me by then ofcourse!) I would want to own the more expensive ones. Her advice was deceptively simple. She said, “Just get the good one and look after it well!” I wasn’t going to argue, but I did begin to wonder. What if it died? Man!..That would be a big blow to my ego! I would also never hear the end of it from her! The latter is what really worried me. :-) (Before I go on, did I mentioned that my wife is the better half! Well she is! In case she reads this! )
I was glad and nervous (ok 90% nervous and 10% glad) at this point of time. I have heard so many horror stories of hobbyists bringing home arowanas only to have them die soon after. I have a personal friend who was only THIRD TIME lucky! His first arowana jumped out of the tank as he had neglected to put a lid. The second got its gills stuck in the wire mesh that he used as a lid! The third is still alive today, more than 4 years old now. Very expensive lessons, as all three were red arowanas which he paid quite a bit of money for.
Anyway, I finally took the plunge on September 2003. Why I remember this so vividly?... not because I was counting the days that my red arowana would be alive ok. It is on the CITES certificate that came with my arowana. :-) And as the saying goes, the rest is history.
I must say I was luckier than most who started out because I had a good friend who was already keeping arowanas at home. (At one time, he had 5 golden arowanas in his 9 foot tank! Real cool!) He helped me get started, but the first few weeks were pretty tense for me. I was constantly worrying whether it was going to die because of something I did or did not do. But I slowly started to gain confidence which was a good feeling after weeks of trepidation.
In those early days as an arowana hobbyist, (wow! sure feels like a long time ago now! :-)) I relied quite a bit on the internet as well to get arowana care tips. I guess like everyone else, we were told that we could find ANYTHING and EVERYTHING on the net right? They just kinda forgot to tell us that sometimes it is like trying to find a needle in the haystack! To be fair, I did find some excellent tips about arowana care out there but the problem is the tedious process of trying to sift through the crap to get to the gems! The information can be so disjointed and is usually quite confusing. Two forums could offer you different advise for the same problem and no one really verifies whether the information is right or not? Bottom line was I started to drown in this sea of information! It got to a point where I was just totally exhausted by this exercise and had to give up!
Visiting some of the aquarium shops were not much better! I always get cryptic and/or vague answers to queries I have. A typical response for information might be, “Keeping an Arowana is very easy. Just make sure you keep the water clean.” Duh! Like I don’t already know this? Give me a break!
The other chief peeve I had when looking for tips was that I could not find any English material on arowana care at all! This really frustrated me because I realized that there were so many of us English speaking arowana hobbyists who were left high and dry, not knowing what to do when the 'poo' hits the ceiling! (There was one hard cover book that I did managed to find after months of searching in the book stores but unfortunately the information was rather disappointing.)
Don't think I can add more to what would have been said of this very well thought off book for the arowana hobbyists, ... perhaps a little criticism, ... but unfortunately none comes to mind. Well done!! K.K.Yeo |
Over the years, I developed some great relationships with several experience arowana hobbyist and I have learnt a lot since. I also found out that many novice hobbyist also faced the same issues like me and did not know where to get good quality information to supplement what little they knew about arowana care. I just recently bought an Australian arrowana 3 weeks ago from an importer and i was very happy on the first few days i got him.He was fine and eating a bit of worms and fish that i fed him. After two weeks i changed ( half change) the water because it was getting a little dark. After i changed the water i noticed that he did not want to eat anything that i give him. I fed him the worm the you normally get from aquarium shops. I also fed him guppies and feeders which he simply ignores. I am kind a worried because i spent a lot of money setting up the aquarium plus paid a good price for the fish. The fish does not show any signs or manifestations of any disease. In fact his tail has improved from the time i bought him. It has been a week now since he last ate a worm. My worry now is that if he does not eat soon he might die. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
