There was an interesting article on Friday in the Singapore Straits Times with regards to tanning lights for arowanas. This ‘new’ product seems to be the talk of the arowana community at the moment.. Have a read below of the full article…

CALL it an artificial sun-tanning device – for fish.

Hobbyists and breeders have taken to a tanning rod developed by leading fish breeder Qian Hu, which exports more than 1,000 species to more than 80 countries.

Switched on over an aquarium, it can intensify the red and gold colours of fish like the Asian arowana, goldfish and koi.

That is a big attraction for enthusiasts who believe that brilliantly hued fish bring them good fortune.

It has already proven a boon to breeders and aquariums – the tanned fish sell for more, even fetching five-figure sums.

A red arowana, which sells for between $1,000 and $80,000 depending on fin size and colour, can go for double the price after tanning.

Qian Hu developed the rod, affixed with LED lights, after working on it for 21/2 years. It went on the market this year.

Kept under the light for six months, the fish develop a tan that lasts about five months.

About 800 of the rods have been sold here so far at between $67 and $159, and 5,000 have been exported.

The popular Nanyang Trading Aquarium in Jalan Kayu said it sold 300 rods to hobbyists in three months.

Three arowana fish farms also acquired the rods with an eye on boosting the quality of their exports.

The idea of tanning fish is not new.

Ornamental fish farmers and hobbyists have long known that arowanas deepen in colour under sunlight.

So they have placed fluorescent lights and even torchlights over their tanks, to give their fish that extra glow.

But Qian Hu’s innovation is the first purpose-built tanning rod for such fish.

Its head of research and development, Mr Alex Chang, explained that the LED rod emits a wider spectrum of ultraviolet rays than fluorescent lights.

He and his team of five tested the rod on more than 300 arowanas.

Mr Chang said: ‘Many people keep these fish for auspicious reasons and they want it to be very red and very gold. We have customers from Russia who spend a lot of money on such fish because they don’t want to waste time tanning the fish themselves.’

Mr Fong Ching Loon, who chairs the Singapore Aquarium Fish Exporters’ Association, said the innovation helped to keep Singapore’s ornamental fish trade competitive.

The Asian arowana, also known as dragonfish, is one of the top 10 popular breeds of fish exported. Exports of this breed alone were worth $5.9 million last year, up from $2.26 million in 2000.

With other species included, Singapore led the global ornamental fish market with $80.3 million in exports last year – a fifth of the world market.

Meanwhile, netizens in online forums such as arowanaclub.com and arofanatics.com have been abuzz over the tanning rod, with some asking if exposure to the light was safe for their pets.

Mr Louis Ng, executive director of Animal Concerns, Research and Education Society (Acres), said research has shown that exposing fish to ultraviolet light is unlikely to have a negative effect on them.

But Ms Deirdre Moss of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, urged hobbyists to pause a while, saying: ‘They should ask themselves: Is it necessary?’

Hobbyist Richard Goh, 50, who has tested the tanning rods, is going ahead to use them on his 200 red and gold arowanas.

‘Red and gold arowanas have to be really red so they bring more luck,’ he said. ‘They are also prettier.’

What do you think I did after I read this article? Yes yes, I’m a sucker for anything that can help my arowanas intensify their color. To be frank, my arowanas already had pretty ‘good’ gold color BUT I just had to try the lights to see how much further they could enhance it!

Soooo I did the obvious…. I bought the lights the very next day!!! Here’s a photo of what the box and light looks like…

Does this really work? I have no idea but what I can say is that Qian Hu would not put it’s reputation on the line if they were not confident that it would. Anyway time will tell and personally, I do hope it works as it would give me immense pleasure watching my enhanced ‘gold bars’ swimming around in the tank! ;D

Cheerio and have a good week ahead!

Hi all,
I had a call about 2 weeks back from someone from Myanmar who wanted to setup a breeding farm there. They were in Singapore for just a few days and since they came all the way to meet me, I could not say no to a meeting with them. Anyway I met a nice old gentlemen with his son who wanted to know how to setup a breeding farm in Myanmar.

They already had 2 ponds breeding green arowanas and they wanted to venture out into reds and xback golds as well. Just out of curiosity, I asked them how much they could sell green arowanas for in Myanmar.. and they said about US$800 per fish! Man! that is a damn good price for greens.

They were looking for someone to help them with the setup as well as enquire about certain techniques to increase their yield. They were getting about 100+ babies a year which I thought was pretty good for 2 ponds.

Anyway, where I’m going with this are the following facts.. I am just reiterating what I wrote in another post but I think it is worth mentioning again if anyone is thinking of giving this a try..
Best to do this with a question/answer format :-

Q – Can asian arowanas (reds, xbacks, RTGS) be bred in other asian countries other than Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore?
Ans – No one has succeeded yet! My advise is, DON’T TRY unless you are playing with excess money as it is not cheap to start such a venture. (I don’t mind if you throw some my way! ) The chances of success is slim. But again, who knows right? You could be the first!

Q – The climate, soil and water is very similar in my country. I should be able to breed them right?
Ans – Well.. if you go by that logic, then probably yes BUT some investors have tried in Thailand but without success. If you go by similarities, then I think Thailand is the closest to Malaysia and Singapore but yet, they have failed to breed them there. I personally think that there are subtle differences in the soil and water makeup that we cannot really differentiate.

Q – How many ponds would I need to even start this investment with?
Ans – Ok.. So you still want to try this out inspite of my frank assessment. (Ok you have some spare chump change to throw! ) What you need to realize is that you will need as many ponds as you can build and fill up, bearing in mind that not all ponds will be productive. Some ponds will be very productive and probably give you a mouthful of fry every 3-4 months and others every 6 months or so and yet others NEVER! For those ponds that have very little yield, you will have to mix them again to increase the chance of the new mix breeding.

Every pond should have at least 20-25 adult fishes to start off with. Xbacks and RTGs can start to breed when about 3+ years while reds will take a bit longer about 4+ years.

I hope that this has given you a good overview on this subject. Drop me a line in this blog if you have any more queries on this very interesting topic.

Cheers!
Steven

Hi all,
Aquarama 2009 is finally here! It’s been a 2 year wait but I think it’ll be worth it! Drop by the Suntec Exhibition Centre in Singapore if you can! I think it’s the largest aquarium show in Asia and should not be missed if you can make it here for this coming weekend. Starts on the 28th and ends on the 31st May.

Get your bi-annual dose of fish (arowanas, goldfish, discus, etc.) competitions, fish, fish and more fish! You will have fish coming out of your ears by the end of the week!

I’ll try and take as much photos and videos as I can on the 28th and 29th and post it on my blog here. Unfortunately I’m going to be away overseas from the weekend onwards and will miss the large crowd that’s expected to turn up for the weekend. I think it’s going to be CRAAAZZZZYYY during the weekend .. As I said, do attend if you’re in the neighbourhood! Many many cheap budget flights nowadays to Singapore. No excuse ya!

Ok cheerio and have a good weekend!

Hi all,
Another interesting article about alleged illegal imports of arowanas. Just proves the stringent checks that the authorities in Singapore goes through to ensure that the farms in Singapore are not doing anything illegal. That’s the good thing about buying arowanas in Singapore… The chances are much higher that they are all legit and of the best quality..

***********************************************************************
AVA investigates illegal import of arowana
Fish without the chips
Neo Chai Chin, Today Online 6 Oct 08;

THE Agri-food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) is investigating the illegal import of 50 arowana fish, an endangered species, into Singapore last Thursday.

The fish, worth about $1,000 each, were discovered by AVA officers at its Changi Animal and Plant Quarantine Station at the Changi Air Freight Centre. They had been flown in from Kalimantan in Indonesia by a local breeding farm, Imperial Arowana.

The farm, at Lim Chu Kang, is owned by award-winning breeder Vincent Chong, who is being questioned by the AVA, which said that investigations are ongoing.

When contacted, Mr Chong said: ?There was an importing misunderstanding, that?s all. Basically, it?s not a big issue. There was some misunderstanding between Singapore and Indonesia.? He declined to provide further details.

The catching of wild arowana is prohibited under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Cites). Under the Endangered Species (Import and Export) Act, illegal traders can be fined up to $50,000 per specimen (or up to $500,000), jailed up to two years, or both. Singapore became a party to Cites in 1986.

According to its website, Imperial Arowana specialises in the export of Asian Arowana species like the Super Red and Xback, which are sourced from Cites-registered farms in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Recent advances have resulted in the breeding of the fish in captivity but they have to be micro-chipped as proof that they were not captured from the wild.

Asian arowana, prized for its brilliant gold and red-gold colours, are often kept by businessmen who believe that the fish brings good fortune. A top specimen can cost around $20,000, a breeder told Today.

There are over a dozen Cites-registered arowana breeding farms in the Lim Chu Kang area. Their operators inform the AVA when breeding pairs have spawned.

When each fish reaches six months of age, a microchip is embedded, in the presence of an AVA official.

Discovery of arowanas’ secrets boosts breeding

Molecular tools help uncover the breeding habits of expensive fish
by Shobana Kesava, The Straits Times Friday 3 Oct 08;

UNLIKE most of their scaly counterparts, Asian arowanas mate for life, local studies by ornamental fish farmers and scientists have found.

And when it comes to taking care of the brood, father knows best. The male carries the babies in its mouth for over six weeks before allowing them to swim free.

The secrets of the world’s most expensive ornamental fish were uncovered using molecular tools at the Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory (TLL) and the fish of mainboard-listed Qian Hu, during a five-year research project.

Their discoveries on breeding habits have led to a doubling in fish production.

‘In the second year alone, it was a 50 per cent increase and each year since then, its been a 20 to 30 per cent increase on the previous year’s broods,’ said lead researcher at TLL, Mr Alex Chang.

Qian Hu managing director Kenny Yap said the group produces a third, or about 10,000 of the world’s supply of this freshwater fish each year.

The studies were conducted on close to 230 adult fish which had their genetic fingerprints put under the microscope.

‘Knowing which fish have paired up could reduce breeding costs, because we can bring smaller numbers of fish together in a single small pond,’ said Mr Yap. It can also guarantee customers who pay thousands of dollars for a fry complete information on the pedigree.

Traditional breeding methods have been hit-and-miss because farmers cannot tell one sex from another, let alone which fish have formed pairs. Breeding patterns are also hard to predict.

‘Most are monogamous, with the odd few going astray or preferring complete celibacy, much like humans,’ said Mr Yap.

To achieve the most prized characteristics and increase the baby count, the next phase of the research will use ‘in-vitro’ fertilisation. This will guarantee specific characteristics are carried by lineage.

‘Within reason, we’ll be able to give the buyers what they want – bigger fins, brighter colour, favoured shape of head,’ Mr Yap said. The company is investing another $3 million over the next three years, on top of the initial sum of $1 million, to start a research centre in Sungei Tengah next year.

Mr Chang, Qian Hu’s first formal scientific scholar, will head the facility, which will have 32 ponds. Two-thirds will be for breeding while a third will be for research.

Professor Peter Ng, director of the Tropical Marine Science Institute, said findings could change the conservation landscape for this species. ‘Of the red, green and silver arowana in the wild, the red is most endangered. There is a chance it is a separate species and if this is proven through the genetic tests, more must be done to protect them.’

With Qian Hu’s expected jump in arowana production, stocks in the wild could be replenished, said Mr Chang.

==============================================================================

Tracing the lineage and habits

* DNA tests comparing fossils and present day arowana show the popular red and green arowana diverged from their prehistoric predecessors up to 30,000 years ago, when Kalimantan separated from the rest of its South-east Asian landmass.

* The fish lack sexual dimorphism – they look the same whether male or female. They become fertile after three years and naturally spawn up to 80 marble-size eggs once a year. In-vitro fertilisation, using cryogenically frozen sperm and eggs harvested from the mother, could see many more fish produced.

* They remain fertile for about 30 years and generally mate for life.

* Extremely protective, the father carries the brood in his mouth for 45 days till they are large enough to fend for themselves. The male fish starve during this time.

* These top predators usually eat live amphibians, fish and insects. TLL and Qian Hu intend to optimise medicines and diet for these prized pets to increase their reproduction.

* A five-month old, 15cm-long red Asian arowana, the most prized colour, can fetch sellers $2,500. The largest known 40-year-old specimens reach 1m.

MELBOURNE, Australia – An Australian woman was sentenced Friday to nine months of community service work for smuggling protected fish from Asia in her dress.

Sharon Naismith, 45, was caught in June 2005 at the airport in the southern city of Melbourne after customs officers heard “flipping” noises coming from her clothes and conducted a search, Australian Customs said.

In a specially made apron under her dress, they found 15 plastic bags filled with water and fish: one rare Asian arowana that customs said was worth tens of thousands of dollars, and 14 catfish.

Hi all,
Thought I’d share this with you. An arowana hobbyist (Thanks Simon for allowing me to share this) wrote to the Australian government to see when they would lift the ban but unfortunately not good news.. Guess Australians will have to wait a bit longer. How long? Your guess is as good as mine but don’t lose hope.. it will come eventually!!

The reply from the Australian authorities is as below …
********************************************************
Subject: Importation of Asian Arowana into Australia [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]
Date: Mon, 2 Jun 2008 15:09:51 +1000
From: Kerrie.Hankinson@environment.gov.au
To: simonchaw@hotmail.com
CC: Nick.Gascoigne@environment.gov.au

Our reference: 2006/07196

Dear Mr. Chaw
Thankyou for your email of 21 May 2008 seeking information regarding the legalisation of Scleropages formosus (Asian Arowana) in Australia.
The Asian Arowana is not listed on the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) list of specimens approved for live import; therefore it is currently illegal to import this species into Australia.
An application was received by the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA) in August 2006 to amend the list of specimens suitable for live import to include Asian Arowana. This application was rejected for inclusion on Part 2 of the list by the Minister for the Environment and Water Resources on 26 September 2007.
The primary reasons for rejecting inclusion of the species on the live import list were:

There is potential for the species to establish feral populations in northern Australia. Their potential for establishment could have undesirable impacts on the Australian environment. For example two native species in the same genus occur in northern Australia and have the same habitat requirements as the Asian Arowana. Competition would therefore be probable if a population was to establish in Australia, to the possible detriment of both native species.

Asian Arowana is listed on the ?grey list? under the Strategic Approach to the Management of Ornamental Fish in Australia, which was endorsed by Commonwealth, State and Territory Ministers at the Natural Resources Management Ministerial Council on 24th November 2006. Species on the ?grey list? are being reviewed under this strategy to decide whether they should be considered a noxious species. It is likely that states and territories would not accept the general keeping of this species if they were considered noxious and in this context, a decision to list such species on the live import list would be highly unlikely. Information on the strategy can be found at: http://www.affashop.gov.au/PdfFiles/ornamental_fish_report.pdf

Please note: Applications to amend the live import list to include Asian Arowana are not likely to be considered until the grey list review has been completed and would only be considered if the species is not a noxious species.http://www.affashop.gov.au/PdfFiles/ornamental_fish_report.pdf’ \o ‘blocked::http://www.affashop.gov.au/PdfFiles/ornamental_fish_report.pdf
The Asian Arowana is a CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna) species and if listed would be an inclusion on Part 2 of the live import list. Restrictions may be imposed on Part 2 listings.
At this stage Asian Arowana cannot be legally imported into Australia due to the potential risks it poses to native Australian species, and the uncertainty of its status as a noxious species. As stated, an application to DEWHA to amend the list of specimens suitable for import has been rejected.
Further information about listing species on the live import list can be obtained from the Departments? website:
