Hi all,
I have received many many personal experiences from readers and I thought that I would pick some of them to share with you as I think that you can learn much from them. I will also give my own personal views of what could have happened and how to prevent it in the future. You do not have to agree with it but hey, that’s life right!
Where would the excitement be if everyone agrees with you!
But seriously, I just want people to contribute so we can all learn from each other. Nothing is cast in concrete and to be frank, I am also learning alot from all of you.. so thanks a lot…
BUT don’t worry, I will ONLY share your stories once I have received permission from you to do so. Also if you want to remain anonymous, let me know… no worries there… SO I would encourage you to share your arowana stories/worries/concerns/etc so that we can all learn from it! I really want to see the arowana community thrive and this is a good start!
I will try and showcase stories that I think will help make us all better arowana hobbyists. No experience is too silly because we all started as amateurs.
Will start the first sharing session the week after May Day as I’ll be flying off to Perth for golf this coming Tuesday. Need a break!
Talk to you soon.
Steven

Most of the times, arowanas are good appetite, watching arowanas enjoying their favourite food. As for my arowana
name ROsie about 7 inches long, she is a bluebase Crossback from Bukit Merah,Taiping .
On Jan 3rd 08,Rosie is not eating and i assumed she don’t feel like eating mealworms .On Jan 4 th,still not eating with bloodworm cube. I feel something is really weird, most of the time,Rosie very eager to eat .
So I left home to work ,outside was really cold, temperature
was like 20 degrees celcius .(winter).And when i got home from work,my Rosie was swimming upsidedown and struggling.
Rosie is in difficulty. And at that time , i don’t have a clue what is wrong with the tank,is it the ph water or something else that affect the water. As i watched closely,
i finally realized the digital meter showing 55 degrees instead of 82 degrees temperature.
1)I hurriedly get a small 30 gallon tank
2)filled in the tank from Rosie cold water (same ph)to half way,so that the water gets gradually warm up in split minutes .
3)carefully used a large aquarium plastic bag to bag Rosie
and released it into the 30 gallon tank.
4)And placed 2 auto aquarium heater into the tank, make sure the heater should be 82 0r 28 celcius.
5)Patiently observing Rosie kicking back and gradually swimming back to its normal.
Learned from my mistakes;
1)During Winter,Spring aND Autumn, make sure the plugs are in
properly plug in .
2)Observed the water temperature and ph
3)any kind of not normal fish behaviour .
Well you are lucky that you realise it and your able to save ROsie in the nick of time. please be more vigilant in future.I have total lost 4 dragon in my mist of trying to rear this beautifull fish but i have learn lots about this hardy but sensitive fish .We must not take things for granted we have to find time to observe them every day to understand their behavior and their appetite.Chow.

Hi Simon,

Hi,
Can anyone tell me something about African Arowana.
Ravi
Guys,
I have a RTG. When purhased 2month ago, i noticed my RTG was a potential Eye Drop.. I tried covering the tank, lower the tank.. nothing worked. Until i tried leaving the fish in total darkness for a month plus (night time only). The thing is that my for my tank’s cover, i use glass (thick one), and on top of that i place my extension gang plug.. Since the gang plug comes with a red light for power indication, it was an attraction for my arowana.. Now, my RTG has fully recovered.. No sign of Drop Eye at all! Hope This would help you guys out there.. Cheerssss
African arowana is less attractive then the Australian arowana, the juveniles are dark grey color,u may find it in the website if you type in google search machine .i had seen one ,many years ago in the petshop .Simon
i strongly agreed to Mr.Shasindren brilliant idea of placing a 24 hour miniature lamp -lite ,on top of the aquarium where the arowana could visible see and attractt o the lite,to prevent arowana’s eye from dropping out .Simon
Mr Krishnan ,
Here is the website from u-tube about african Arowana ,IT looks like a snakehead (ikan haruan ) Bye

Hi steven, hw r u doing…? I’m good and my Silver Arowana too is very healty.
Ok, i wanna ask u something which triggers me 2 days ago after talking to a friend of mine.
Steven, i use to change water every week and the amount of water i discharge from the tank is about 70 to 80 percent. I also remove and clean all the bio balls valcano rocks and the sponge at the filter area tho. That means a full 90 percent. Then i re-fill with tap water. After filling the water, i’ll pour the anti clorine – 1 cap full, anti bacteria – 1 cap full and a hand full of blue salt.
It takes about 10 to 15 minutes for my arowana and other tank mates to get ok as usual.
Advise me if this could be carry out in the future and will it harm my silver and other tank mates.
Many thanks
Takeshi75
Simon,
Thanks for your kind words! Much appreciated.
Steven
Takeshi75,
You are changing too much water! Only 20-25% at any one time. Never wash your bioball as they contain all the good bacteria on it! No need to do that. You should change your filter any 2 weeks or so. If you change only 20-25%, then you don’t have to worry about anti-chlorine…
IMHO you are lucky your arowana is still alive my friend!
Steven
hi
i bought 3 silver arowana 2 days back, length is apx 7 inch and i have 1.5meter tank. i request you friends pls guide me.
rgds
I got problem with my gold pearl arowana..the scale on the top of my arowana are loss 1..and then, i look my arowana don’t want to eat much..what i must do?? please help me..
if i changes 20%-30% water inside my tank, how many capp for anti-clorine i must put in??
Thanks..
Asrizan,
You do not need to put anti chlorine at all. I don’t if you only change about 25% each time. The scales dropped off probably because it jumped against the lid… don’t worry as they will grow back. It’s normal for arowanas to jump.
Steven
Parkesh,
Read some of the thread here and they will help you. There is just too much to advise you on. Sorry.
Steven
Hi Steven Yeoh (The Proffesor of Arowana )

Dear Steven,
I have had an Asian Arowana for nearly 10 years. I would guess it at 16 inches long. My Arowana has never had any barbels even when I purchased it in 2001 at a few inches long. Can you tell me why that is? He appears to be in perfect health, eats really really well. He must be in good health and well taken care of or he would have died years ago. I have read in some blogs that you should put the aquarium in complete darkness for an extended amount of time. I have also read to do water changes daily, which I must admit I only do my water changes every couple of weeks or so. When I purchased the arowana I just figured they would grow back as I have had many silver arowanas in my days and the barbels would grow back if damaged. Just has always saddened me a little that he does not have them. Also, I wander why I was never made aware they were endangered. I am in the United States…I wander how did the pet shop get it? I have been thinking about donating it to the zoo as it has been raised in a 75 gallon aquariun since being purchased…I am quite sure he would be much larger had he been in a bigger aquarium. Have also been thinking about purchasing a 150 gallon aquarium because I have to admit I am attached to him. I would just like him to be in a bigger aquarium. I would include a picture of him but would need an email address. I do not even know what kind he is….is clearly not a red or the yellowish colored. I would assume a green and from what I have read they are not that hard to come by….but to me he is very very beautiful. Perhaps that is how I was able to get him…. perhaps the green are not on an endangered species list. Perhaps they were not endangered then but are now. I wander if I should let someone know what I have or perhaps it is best to take him to the zoo. These are just beautiful beautiful fish. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated. If possible please email me as I am not sure I am smart enough to get back to this blog.
Please keep my posts annonymous…thanks
Mr. Schwab
I have continued to look around on the internet and I think perhaps I have a Jardini Arowana and probably was lied to by the pet shop..or perhaps they did not know any better. Are the Jardini (Australia) Arowana endangered as well? I do not want to be doing anything illegal. Isn’t it amazing that after 10 years of taking care of this beauty I am just now finding out perhaps what he is. Seems like several of photos I Iooked at of the Jardinis the barbels were absent. Still would like to email you a picture for verification if possible. Thanks.
Mr. Schwab
Schwab,
Australian arowanas (Jardini) are not endangered. So you are ok …
Steven
Hi Schwab,
I will not know what species he is unless I have a look. I don’t think it’s an asian arowana though. What you can do is google the internet and type in words like ‘australian arowana’ or ‘african arowana’ or ‘south american arowana’ or etc, and just compare the pictures that shows up to your own one. There should be a match somewhere.
Best of luck!
Steven
some times its a pain in the ass to read what people wrote but this website is very user friendly ! .
Hi ! to all the supreme rulers of the Arro world
Exchange your gold for bags of insects( crickets, centipede, grasshoppers etc…) feed them with rich foods (oats, bran bread, lettuce, apple etc…..) and after a few hours when they are fat and juicy freeze them up.. Than put them in an air tight container,.give a little shake and RETURN into the freezer(please label the container,).Daily defrost a few for your beloved ARROS .Please do not disseminate this information to anyone in your area ,cos there will be no more insects to buy .Cheers ! may you rule with compassion and love
Mr Schwab,
The only arowanas that are endangered and placed under CITES are the asian arowanas. The African, Australians and South American ones are not endangered and you can probably get them in the US. Only the Asian Arowanas are illegal in the US.
As for the barbels problem, its very hard to say whether they will grow back or not. I had a very young arowana once who’s barbel broke while being transported to my house. I thought it would grow back easily but it never really did and had always remains like a stump. ;-( So in this case, I guess it depends on your arowana.
Steven
Mr Schwab,
Jardinis, as far as I know are not illegal in the US.
Steven
