I think your pump is definitely too strong.  Like you said, arowanas like calm water and eventhough half your tank is, your fish could still be stressed by the other half.  Hope this makes sense. ;-)  
When arowanas, moved to new environment, it can take them sometime to get used to it.  So you need to be patient.  During this period, they will not eat which is normal...
