Arowana Care eBook For the Passionate Hobbyists

Cloudy eye hits my arowana again!

Man! This is really painful as my red arowana has a cloudy eye again.? This time is worst than the last time!? It’s actually my fault!? I made the mistake of going away over the weekend and leaving some live goldfish in the tank to tide it over the next few days.? I think some of the goldfish died in the tank and just rotted away, hence polluting the water.??
?
What is the lesson learned here?? Duh!
If you are travelling and no one is going to be around to feed your arowana, you can buy feeder fish and dumped the whole lot into your tank?(I don’t really recommend this but sometimes you have no choice right? icon sad Cloudy eye hits my arowana again! ??Better to have someone help feed your fish if possible.)?.. BUT you need to do due diligence to ensure that the feeder fish don’t die in the tank and rot away!?
Anyway, the point to note here is to buy them about 2 days before you go away and keep them at home to make sure that these feeder fish don’t die on you.? The problem is when you buy them from the shops, they are all bagged in bunches of maybe?10-20 fish and after awhile, they all look half dead in?that bag!? Try not to buy these but sometimes you can’t really tell until you get home and put?them into your tank.? After half a day, you should know whether they have survived the trauma of being in that bag for god knows how long!?
Sometimes you take a chance and you get burn like me!? Sigh!

Oh.. nearly forgot.. how to you cure this cloudy eye?? change the water and add salt each time and after a few of these water changes, the problem should go away.

Cheers!
Steven

    Sam,
If your arowana is a female, you might see it lay eggs one day in the tank. but to put in another arowana to breed, it will be tough. There has been very few cases of breeding in tanks recorded..

    Hi Steven

thank you for e-mailing me regarding your electronic care book.

My Malaysian golden will be 2years old in February 2007. 12.5 inches in
length. Its tail and anal fins are getting jagged. It becomes slightly white and fin disappears. It look like the tail fin is going to tear and I can imagine when that happens it will look like a used broom.

Xian Leng (Shah Alam) marketing manger looking at he photograph of the
fish said it is a PH problem
    So did another aquarist
And another aquarist who came to see the fish said it a batercia infection probably from an infected fish . Advice to remove fish to another, Change water completely and claen the tank. saying the new water that contain cholrine will kill bacteria. And transfer fish back to the tank.
Another aqurist says medicate the water for 5days problem will disappear.

Tried maintaing Ph – for 3weeks – no improvement getting worse
Changed water completely and transfered fish back into same tank
    - slow deterioration
Today already put medication into the tank. Next water change is supposed to be on Wednesday.

    Please advise

    thankyou

    Matthew,
I also think that it is a fin rot problem (bacteria infection) and medication should cure it. You should never change water completely though but do a 1/4 tank change every other day for the next week or so. Also keep your sick arowana away from other fishes until it is cure in case it infects others. Also make sure that you aerate the water enough as this is important.
    All the best…

Hi, Iam just new in taking care of an arowana, mine is a golden arowana (autralian). my problem is that my arowana seldom eat. I started with a superworm then shifted to dried sera pellets then again shifted to pataba fishes. and now it still seldom eat. what would be the problem. I change the water twice a month. Please help me

    Cholo,
Do send me an email at steven@arowana-care.com if you have any further questions.
    Here are some pointers..
    1) Arowanas do not need to eat every day. So it is normal ok.. :-) How seldom are you talking about?
    2) You need to change your water more often like every week if possible. This could be the reason why it is not eating well…

    Hi!
My red arowana jumped out of the tank and now my gold one had cloudy eye.
Ihave been changing water on a 2-3 days basis and testing water regularly.
I also been treating my gold one with antibiotics such as penicylin and tetracylin, also tried melafix but there’s no improvement.
    What else can i do?
