Arowana Care eBook For the Passionate Hobbyists

Bringing your new arowanas home …

Was supposed to get this post out months ago but only found time now. Apologies for that…
Ok. what do you do when you are ready to bring your arowana(s) home? IMPORTANT …. BEFORE I EVEN DO THAT… REMEMBER TO CYCLE YOUR WATER WELL… I CYCLE MY WATER FOR AT LEAST 3-4 WEEKS BEFORE I EVEN BRING THEM HOME… REMEMBER THIS CRUCIAL CRUCIAL STEP!!!

Ok .. now back to the topic… icon biggrin Bringing your new arowanas home ...
When the arowanas are brought home, you should put the plastic bags with the fishes into the tank. This is to allow the temperature in the bags to approach that of the tank water.. If the water temperature is too much, this will stresss your fish unnecessarily. So be patience with this step. I usually leave the bags in for about 30 min to allow thiis to happen.

After this, slowly open up the bags and fill them up with the water (everytime with a single scoop or two of water into the bags) from the tank. Do this several times until the bags are almost full of water. Should be an interval of about 20 minutes or so between each time. This is also to help ‘equalize’ the water.
Look at the four photos below to get an idea…

Your arowanas can be a bit jumpy when they are in a new environment.. so don’t get too worried. They will probably also not eat for the first couple of days. ALL THIS IS NORMAL OK…. So don’t go pulling out your hair worrying about something normal.. icon biggrin Bringing your new arowanas home ...

Below here are my new golden babies in their new tank.. Enjoy and take care!

I moved my 20 ” Golden arowana from my garage to my office. I did the same thing what do you said. I have a bit of experience of keeping arowana.

After he is in his new envirnoment I knew he will be a bit quite and hiting in the conrner all the time , but after a week he started to swim a bit but alway go back the same conrner if he see anybody walking near the tank. How after 4 weeks he do the same thing have not change at all. Also he have not be eating now for 6 weeks. Even thought he was like that not be eating he is still very strong., Please advise ?? would he be back to normal himself?? How long does it take??

Thank you for your help and comment.

iya, saya biasanya sebelum ganti air yang baru, air mesti di endapkan/didiamkan 3 atau 4 hari supaya ikan nanti bisa menyesuaikan diri di akuarium yang baru.

Hi Steven: Thanks for your tips By the way your arrowanas looked great.
Could you let us know the size of your tank because changing of tanks at a later stage is a costly affair and space constraint. My arrowana is almost 24ins and is in a 5ftX2ft tank. Is this acceptable to the fish without causing any stress what soever. So far the fish is happy and eating well and is now 4 years old. Colourwise it is golden at the scales but no visible red as yet.
